Avon Story

My Mum used to be an Avon Lady when I was a child. I used to love the perfume bottles and tiny lipstick samples. (they still do those lippy samples you know)

We seem to have gone full circle as I am now an Avon Rep. Oh how exciting delivery day is, when the courier arrives with big brown boxes full of Avon goodies – it’s like Christmas (except it all belongs to someone else…and I have to charge them for it!)

Selling Avon has been a steep learning curve and I have recently started a blog with tips and hints of ideas I have picked up on my Avon journey. I hope it will help other Avon Ladys increase their sales and perhaps encourage people interested in Avon to join too.

Loving this: www.avonandme.co.uk. Any Avon stories anyone? (As in the products – not the river …)

Avon, biscuits and lovely old ladies

My days as an Avon Representative were a life saver for me when my daughters were very little. I moved away from my home town with my very young family and needed to make friends. 30 years later I still have some of those same loyal friends. I also managed to make some money. I bought our first caravan and a very battered piano for the girls to hammer on:-) sorry practice.

I used to visit a lady every month who bought just talc from me. Not one but usually 3-4 at a time. I often wondered what she did with all that powder, I had visions of cupboards full of the stuff being found by her relatives when she died recently and them turning up at my door with the boxes – I know she was lonely and enjoyed seeing my daughters, I had to tell myself that to overcome the guilt of charging her.

She was one of many lonely middle aged women. Housewives of their time, not expected to work but bored out of their minds, a bit of lippy and a chat brightened up their day. Often on my rounds I would be offered tea or coffee, buscuits and naughty buns, as an an incentive to stay for a chat and I soon learned that my bladder could not stand the volumn, so vowed that I would only accept their hospitality if there was a good order. This is where the ruthless Avon Lady in me came in.

I started to realise I wasnt just delivering cosmetics but some company and my cute daughters as entertainment. It wasnt long before my round was the most successful in the area. Then the crunch came, Avon wanted to know my secret and would I do a presentation at their annual conference. I deliberated for some time, how could I tell a room full of Representatives that the products and my selling skills were second to non? So I decided instead to quit cos those bloody talcs and perfumes made me sneeze most of the time. Lippy and Skinsosoft was good though.

Not very lucrative

My mum used to sell Avon also. We didn’t exactly become millionaires overnight. Not very lucrative.

Airport Control Parades!

Not sure what you’re after. Not got anything specifically but I do love their stuff! I buy kids shampoo and conditioner in bulk as its really cheap and very good! There was a woman at work a few years ago that used 2 order stuff for everyone as she liked the little old lady that was the Avon rep! We used 2 parade around the control room in the free stuff they sent like night gowns and bags etc! The men thought we were mad!

Edward Scissorhands

i don’t have a particular memory, as we don’t get Avon round here much, but i love the scene with all the Avon stuff in edward scissorhands, if that helps at all. to this day i get disappointed if i see an Avon rep NOT wearing a little lavender hat…

My Grandmother and her Avon Lady

My memory of Avon is of my grandmother getting the catalogue every month from the Avon lady. When I was at her house, she would show me what she was ordering and then say, oh look, it’s not quite enough to get the free gift or similar, and get me to choose something for myself ‘to make up the difference’. Even when I was at uni she’d still get me to choose something on my visits home, a little treat. I still sometimes miss getting that catalogue and seeing what new products they had and I still love buying makeup even though I rarely wear any!
